Electrician inspecting and troubleshooting an electrical panel in Dallas, TX

I get asked this question a lot: how often should you schedule an electrical inspection in Dallas, TX? I'm Fabian Gonzalez, founder of Gonelectrical, and I want to give you an honest answer — which is that there isn't a single schedule I can hand you without seeing your property.

Electrical systems age, and how fast they show wear depends on the age of the home, how the system has been used, and what's been added over the years. Instead of reciting an interval, I'd rather help you recognize the signs that it's time to have a professional take a look.

There's no single schedule I can give you

I won't pretend there's one rule that fits every home and business. A newer system in good condition doesn't need the same attention as a 40-year-old panel that's been asked to carry more loads than it was built for. What I can tell you is this: if you're noticing any of the signs below, or you're planning a change that adds demand, it's worth having a Texas Master Electrician look things over.

I've spent more than a decade in the electrical industry, and the calls I get rarely start with "I want a routine inspection." They start with a symptom — something that doesn't feel right. So let's start there.

Signs it's time to have a professional look at your system

Breakers tripping or fuses blowing

A breaker that trips once in a while isn't unusual. A breaker that trips repeatedly on the same circuit is telling you something — usually that the circuit is overloaded or there's a fault downstream. That's a good moment to call for troubleshooting and repairs before it becomes a bigger problem.

Flickering or dimming lights

Lights that dim when an appliance kicks on, or flicker without an obvious cause, can point to a loose connection, an overloaded circuit, or a problem at the panel. It's worth diagnosing rather than living with.

Warm outlets, switch plates, or panels

If an outlet, switch plate, or your panel feels warm to the touch, or you notice a faint burning smell near it, stop using that circuit and call a professional. That's a sign I take seriously, and so should you.

Older wiring or ungrounded outlets

If your home has older two-prong outlets, cloth-wrapped wiring, or aluminum wiring, it's worth having the system assessed. Wiring and dedicated circuit work, outlet and GFCI upgrades, and panel upgrades are all things I evaluate regularly for exactly these situations.

When to schedule a look before there's a problem

Before adding a major load

If you're planning an EV charger installation, a whole-home generator, or a major appliance, I'll confirm your panel has the capacity first. Sometimes the right answer is an upgrade before the new device goes in. The same goes for dedicated circuits — adding the load safely comes before adding the equipment.

After buying a property

If you've just bought a home or commercial space in the area, a baseline look at the panel, grounding, and overall condition is a reasonable way to start. I serve Dallas, TX and the surrounding communities — from Mesquite and Forney to Rockwall, Rowlett, Richardson, and beyond — and the process is the same wherever the property is.

What a look at your system leads to

When I assess a system, I explain what I find in plain terms. Some visits end with reassurance that everything's in good shape. Others lead to a recommendation — a panel upgrade, a wiring repair, lighting or outlet work, or a repair on a faulty circuit. You'll get a clear estimate before any work begins, and the workmanship is backed by a one-year warranty.

Keep it simple

You don't need to guess at a schedule. If something seems off, or you're about to add demand to your system, that's the right time to call. For residential electrical service or commercial electrical service, I'll tell you honestly whether you need service now or can wait.
